X-Men ’97 executive producer Julia Lewald has shared her advice for Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. According to Lewald, the new X-Men movie should focus on the “humanity behind the mutants,” not just their spectacular powers.
Lewald says that each mutant should have genuine personal reasons to be unhappy with what has happened to them. While they are always facing individual struggles, the X-Men choose to stay together and support one another.
In a recent interview with Collider, Lewald said, “Superpowers are spectacular. Super mutations… oh, that’s so cool; she can fly, or throw a building… but it’s the internal stuff. It’s the humanity inside, and each of them has their own genuine reasons to be unhappy with what’s happened to them in their lives, yet they all still choose to become a found family and be together.” The found family aspect of the X-Men is why the characters have resonated with so many fans over the years.
Recently, X-Men writer and executive producer Eric Lewald shared an important piece of advice for the writers and filmmakers working on the new X-Men movie. Lewald highlighted the importance of staying faithful to the established characters and preserving what makes them special to longtime fans.
“It’s just the fidelity of the characters,” Lewald said, stressing that creative changes should not come at the expense of the characters’ core identities.
Lewald added, “Sometimes if you’re in a creative position, you want to leave your mark and say, ‘Sherlock Holmes isn’t smart anymore,’ or whatever change you want to do with the characters. But you have to know, people have lived with them. They watched with their parents, and now they’re watching with their children.”
MCU’s X-Men movie is set to bring together the five original members in a coming-of-age story. “After years of hiding due to fear of rejection and persecution, the mutants will finally step out of the shadows to save the world and prove they’re not a threat.“
According to a scooper, the X-Men movie will focus on Sadie Sink‘s Jean Grey and Kit Connor‘s Scott Summers against the backdrop of Mr. Sinister’s obsession with them. The plot is said to be inspired by a comic storyline in which Adam Driver‘s Sinister reveals that he had been manipulating Scott since childhood, after Scott was taken to an orphanage secretly controlled by Sinister.
The initial cast for Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie has been revealed by Marvel President Kevin Feige at Disney’s D23 event. The lineup includes Sink as Jean Grey, Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Driver as Nathaniel Milbury/Mr. Sinister.
The current working title for Marvel’s X-Men reboot is reportedly “Chunnel.” According to an updated report from FilmBase UK, Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie is expected to begin filming toward the end of summer. The production could take place in Ireland or at Pinewood Studios.
The report also claims that the film will shoot under Atlas Hall Productions. Meanwhile, Black Panther III is reportedly using Fragment Productions, while Marvel’s newly created Dredge Productions could be used for Ghost Rider, though that has not been confirmed.
Directed by Jake Schreier, with Lee Sung Jin, Joanna Cole, and Michael Lessie serving as co-writers, Sanja Milkovic Hays as costume designer, Kasra Farahani as production designer, Pat Scola as cinematographer, and the Russo Brothers as consultants.
The X-Men movie will be released exclusively in theaters on May 5, 2028.
