In the MCU’s Phase 6, Marvel movies have faced a lack of stories, and a few movies have underperformed at the box office. Recently, the Russo Brothers addressed whether Avengers: Doomsday will “fix the MCU.”
In a recent interview with AP News, Joe and Anthony Russo acknowledged that “fixing” the MCU is part of the unique challenge of making the film. They explained that their job is not to address or solve the entire MCU. Instead, the Russos focus on the specific part of the MCU where their story intersects with the larger universe.
Anthony said, “It’s part of the unique challenge.” He added, “The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU. We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.”

Joe Russo explained why Avengers: Doomsday was filmed with an unfinished script. Joe Russo describes the Russo Brothers as “improvisation-based” and “rehearsal-based directors.” They like to see what the actors bring to their characters. Some actors only join the production a few days or weeks before filming. Russo says this is often when “the magic happens.”
The Russo Brothers reveal that Avengers: Doomsday was inspired by the classic Western Once Upon a Time in the West.
“Throughout cinema history, the Western has been declared dead for decades, and then you can still make one of the greatest examples of the genre.”
Anthony Russo says he is “buzzing” from Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s reception and describes its success as “a wonderful challenge.” The film has already earned $2.3 billion worldwide.
The Russos have described Doomsday as “back to zero,” “starting from scratch,” and “a profound shift” for the MCU. They see Doomsday as a defined beginning, while Endgame represented a legitimate ending to the story they were telling.
