Godzilla Minus Zero is releasing in theaters in two weeks. The film received excellent reviews from critics following its world premiere and earned a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Director Takashi Yamazaki, who directed both Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus Zero, also served as the writer and visual effects supervisor on the first film. He revealed that he looked to James Cameron’s Aliens and Terminator 2 for inspiration for the sequel.

Speaking to Empire, Yamazaki said he admired how Cameron’s sequels took different approaches while staying connected to the original stories.
“I’m going to have to give credit to James Cameron,” Yamazaki said, citing Aliens and Terminator 2 as some of his favorite sequels. “He looks at the original and finds another interesting hook point and digs much deeper. Oftentimes his sequels will take a slightly different angle, but still rooted in a lot of what was built in the first film. I was curious how his second films are outperforming the originals in a lot of ways.”
Yamazaki describes this shift toward a family-focused story as a new direction for Godzilla Minus Zero. The film will expand on the story of Godzilla Minus One by focusing on both larger-scale monster action and deeper emotional themes.
The director said, “The shift from Shikishima as an individual to putting the focus on the family was a different vector for Minus Zero.” He added that the film continues to explore Japan’s postwar state of mind.
“I think there are parallels between the recovery of Japan at the time and the building of the Shikishima family,” he explained. “In Minus Zero, the state of the country as well as the state of Shikishima’s family is improving. Hence, they’re approaching ‘zero’ in a way, and a new threat appears that basically threatens to take that away.”
Written and directed by Yamazaki, who also handles the film’s visual effects, Godzilla Minus Zero serves as a sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One. It is the 39th film in the Godzilla franchise, the 34th produced by Toho, and the sixth entry in the franchise’s Reiwa era.
The cast of Godzilla Minus Zero includes Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, Jun Kunimura as Dr. Ogata, Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, Min Tanaka as Kanji Murakami, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, and Sae Nagatani as Akiko.
Godzilla Minus Zero is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face a new calamity. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, the hero who faced Godzilla in the first film, alongside Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo.
Toho will release Godzilla Minus Zero in Japan on November 3, 2026, and in the United States on November 6.
