Warning: This post contains potential spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday.
Chris Evans was supposed to appear in the post-credits scene of Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but it was removed, and later Marvel announced his casting in a teaser trailer.
According to John Rocha (via Earth 616/X), Marvel Studios planned Evans’ cameo in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
“The Fantastic Four and Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) ask Steve Rogers to come with them to the MCU, Earth-616, to help them gain the heroes’ trust. This was supposedly a post-credits scene in Fantastic Four that got removed. It could still be a scene in the movie.”
Sometime after Avengers: Endgame and before the end of Loki Season 2, Loki goes to see Steve, who is living with Peggy and has a son. Loki tells Steve that the TVA is going to prune this timeline because Steve is not supposed to be there and is not supposed to have a child. Loki offers Steve a way out: he will move Steve and his family to a universe where they never existed, allowing them to live peacefully. That universe turns out to be the Fantastic Four’s universe.
They live there for years, until the events of Avengers: Doomsday, when Doom arrives to warn the Fantastic Four about the Incursions and tells them they must travel to the MCU to stop them. Reed and Doom come up with a plan, track down Steve, explain everything to him, and ask for his help. Steve agrees to return to the MCU with them so he can convince the heroes there to help.

As reported by Alex P (via The Cosmic Circus), Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter will reportedly follow Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. She believes Doom can help her and her son fix the multiverse, a crisis partly caused by Steve Rogers.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Anthony Russo said that Steve Rogers has a central role in the Avengers and the overall MCU story.
Russo said, “His central role in the Avengers and the larger narrative of what the MCU has been is something that’s very personal to us. We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it.”
Directed by the Russo brothers from a screenplay by their longtime collaborator Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron.
Here’s the plot synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday:
“Doctor Doom has officially arrived on the Marvel Cinematic Universe stage. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the multiverse. Marvel’s most iconic actor, Robert Downey Jr., also returns as Doctor Doom!”
