The first trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is now playing in select theaters across the U.S.
Following the theatrical screening, a low-quality version of the trailer was leaked online by a user on X (formerly Twitter).
The trailer has a duration of 1 minute and 10 seconds, featuring Tom Holland as Telemachus (son of Odysseus) and Jon Bernthal in an undisclosed role, having a conversation about Odysseus (Matt Damon), who has gone missing after the war.
An unknown voice says, “Darkness, Zeus’ laws smashed to pieces, a kingdom without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war—and then, somehow…”
Bernthal’s character says, “I know nothing of Odysseus, not since Troy.”
Telemachus (Holland) replies, “I have to find out what happened to my father. When did you last see him?” Bernthal then shouts and says, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have the story? Some say he’s rich, some say he’s poor, some say he has perished, some say he’s in prison. What say you?”
Telemachus asks him, “In prison? What kind of prison can hold a man like that?”

At the end of the trailer, Odysseus (Damon) is seen lying in the middle of the ocean on a wrecked raft.
Here’s the plot details for The Odyssey:
The Odyssey will be a mythical action epic based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer. It tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
Set in the 8th century BC, after the ten-year Trojan War, the Greek hero Odysseus travels from Troy to Ithaca via Africa and southern Europe. His journey lasts an additional ten years, during which he faces many dangers, and all of his crewmates are killed. In his absence, Odysseus is presumed dead, leaving his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, to deal with a group of unruly suitors competing for Penelope’s hand in marriage.
The film stars Damon as Odysseus, Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o as Calypso, Robert Pattinson as Hermes, Charlize Theron as Circe, along with Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, and Nick E. Tarabay in undisclosed roles.
According to reports, The Odyssey is expected to be R-rated and will feature at least one intimate scene.
The film is produced by Nolan alongside his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner. The project will have a $250 million budget, making it one of Nolan’s most expensive films ever.
The Odyssey will be released in theaters and IMAX in the United States on July 17, 2026, by Universal Pictures.
