David F. Sandberg, director of ‘Shazam!‘ and ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ is set to direct a film adaptation of ‘Until Dawn.’
The project, based on the PlayStation horror video game, is a collaboration between Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, both falling under the Sony corporate umbrella. The logline is a well-kept secret, but Screen Gems calls it an R-rated love letter to the horror genre with a focus on an ensemble cast.
What is the ‘Until Dawn’ Game About?
‘Until Dawn’ is a scary game that came out in 2015 for the PlayStation 4. It’s about a group of friends stuck on a mountain, and what happens next depends on the choices you make. The game is cool because your decisions affect the story and who survives. People liked it for its good story and movie-like feel.
Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter of It, Annabelle, and The Nun, is revising a script by Blair Butler, known for Sony’s The Invitation. Under his Coin Operated banner, Dauberman, who signed a first-look deal with Screen Gems and Sony for horror movies, is producing ‘Until Dawn.’ Dauberman has completed the Warner Bros. adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot and is currently working on a live-action version of the 1980s animated series Gargoyles for Disney+.
The production team includes Sandberg, Lotta Losten (Mangata), Roy Lee (Vertigo Entertainment), and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
The project is overseen by Screen Gems’ head Ashley Brucks and Michael Bitar. Screen Gems’ Dan Primozic managed the rights and dealmaking. PlayStation Productions has been active, with projects like The Last of Us moving from console to screen.
