The film is written and directed by Mark Jenkin and stars Mary Woodvine as The Volunteer, Edward Rowe as The Boatman, Flo Crowe as The Girl, John Woodvine as The Preacher, Joe Gray as The Miner, and Loveday Twomlow as The Baby.
What is the plot of Enys Men?
In 1973, on a deserted island near the Cornish coast, a wildlife volunteer’s daily observations of a rare flower become a metaphysical journey, blurring the line between reality and nightmare. The only indicator of the passing time is a fruticose lichen growing on the flowers and the protagonist’s body over three days. She encounters a mysterious standing stone, a teenage girl who may be her daughter or younger self, an enigmatic preacher who could be her father, ghostly miners haunting the island’s tunnels, and a fisherman who may have been her past love interest.
Enys Men, filmed during the COVID-19 lockdown, focused on maintaining a small carbon footprint throughout production. The film had its premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
‘Enys Men,’ Mark Jenkin’s experimental folk horror film, will be available for streaming on Hulu on August 9, 2023.
