James Gunn‘s Superman movie is now available on digital platforms, and Gunn explains why it is being released for home viewing 35 days after its theatrical debut.
According to Gunn, the early digital release of Superman is connected to the upcoming release of Peacemaker Season 2. He believed Peacemaker would premiere next month, but due to certain reasons, its release was moved to an earlier date.
Gunn wanted all fans, including those unable to visit theaters, to see Superman before Peacemaker arrives. The decision was influenced by factors “beyond our control,” said Gunn.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Gunn said, “It’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month.” He added, “There were a lot of things that are beyond our control, so Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman who wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”
Following the Peacemaker Season 2 NYC premiere, the show debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised it as “fun, hilarious, and John Cena is fantastic.”
In Season 2, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (Cena) discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.
Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed three, including the first. Gunn, Peter Safran, and John Cena serve as executive producers. Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones also direct. Based on characters from DC, Peacemaker is produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The cast of Peacemaker Season 2 includes Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Agent Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Frank Grillo as General Rick Flag, Sr. Recurring roles feature Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith/White Dragon, Nhut Le as Rip Jagger/Judomaster, Dee Bradley Baker as the voice of Eagly, Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows as Agent Langston Fleury, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow as Keeya Adebayo, Brey Noelle as Jaina Hudson/White Rabbit, Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, Terence Rosemore as Otis Berg, Reinaldo Faberlle as Mexicali, Brandon Stanley as Ponyboy, Anissa Matlock as Titties, Dorian Kingi as Encino Man, Michael Ian Black as Cleavis Thornwaite, David Denman in a to-be-confirmed role, and Taylor St. Clair as Mrs. Chase. Superman is now available to buy or rent on digital HD platforms, and Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on August 21, 2025, at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO Max.
