The MCU is set to conclude after 20 years. According to entertainment journalists Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzales, Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ will act as a reboot for the MCU.
As previously reported, ‘Secret Wars’ will be a soft reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Earth-1999. It marks the end of the current MCU and the Fox-Verse, setting the stage for a new and distinct MCU.
What was Marvel’s original plan for three major characters in the MCU and what caused it to change?
Marvel initially planned to keep three major characters as the foundation for new heroes: Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). They even saw themselves as the future of the MCU during ‘Endgame’ filming. However, this plan didn’t work out due to Boseman’s passing, Larson’s mixed fan reception, and Holland’s contract disputes. The MCU is still searching for a new “face,” the authors even joked about trying to bring Robert Downey Jr. back with a dump truck full of money.
Robinson said, “Marvel’s original plan was to keep three major characters around as a “familiar umbrella” under which new heroes could grow: Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. At one point during the filming of Endgame, the trio sat together and said aloud, “Look at us, the future of the MCU.” Unfortunately, this didn’t work out as intended, with Boseman passing away, Larson not connecting with “enough” fans for “whatever reason”, and Holland caught in a contract war between Marvel Studios and Sony.”
The MCU journey began with 2008’s ‘Iron Man,’ starring Downey Jr., and now, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ set to release on May 7, 2027, will commemorate a 20-year MCU legacy.
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is a sequel to previous Avengers movies, including “The Avengers,” “Age of Ultron,” “Infinity War,” “Endgame,” and “The Kang Dynasty.” The film is the forty-sixth installment in the MCU, serving as the final chapter of Phase Six and The Multiverse Saga.
Michael Waldron pens the script, and the director could be Alfonso Cuarón or Sam Raimi. Reports indicate that Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine will play a “major part” in the storyline, which picks up after the events of ‘Deadpool 3‘. Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, is set to be the main villain in “Secret Wars.” It’s unclear if the movie will follow the well-known 1980s storyline where the Beyonder brought Marvel characters to Battleworld. That storyline had a big impact, leading to Venom’s creation.
