(Alert: This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5.)
New set images of Stranger Things Season 5 featuring Joe Keery and Gaten Matarazzo filming a scene were spotted on December 12, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. The final stage of filming is currently underway, with production set to wrap by late December.
The images show Keery’s Steve Harrington visiting Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin at his college. It may be an epilogue scene, which could mean that Steve survives. The final episode will feature a time jump to 1989. Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas are expected to survive — and graduate from Hawkins High School. The show’s co-creator Matt Duffer confirms that Season 5 will be the final season, concluding the stories of Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, and Hopper.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Matarazzo shared that Dustin remains the same lovable character fans know from Stranger Things. However, he carries the trauma and weight of loss, which shapes his early story in the new season. Dustin’s journey will focus on coping with intense grief and growing as a person at a young age.
Gaten said, “He’s still the guy we know and love in Stranger Things, but there’s a context of trauma and the weight of loss that seems to carry on with him throughout the early part of the season. Hopefully, that’s something people enjoy seeing—watching him grow through that arc and starting to deal with intense grief at a young age.”
Gaten added, “I think a lot of people, myself included, can really resonate with and understand what that confusion and rage can feel like, because it is an enraging thing to deal with. So, I’m stoked for people to see that.”
He continued, “I think it’s a different vibe, for sure, because things are obviously very different going into this season compared to past ones. In Season 4, we saw small victories, like the sense that Vecna seemed subdued. But there was also a major loss, with the rifts opening throughout Hawkins. By the end of Season 4, Hawkins was in real disarray. So, we’re starting this season in the aftermath of that.”
Season 5 stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven / Jane Hopper, Gaten Matarazzo as Henderson, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Keery as Steve Harrington, Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley, Amybeth McNulty as Vickie, Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair, Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna / Henry Creel / One, Linda Hamilton, and Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler.
During the Happy Sad Confused podcast’s 10th-anniversary celebration in New York City, Harbour says that the final season “is the best episode they’ve ever done.”
Created by the Duffer brothers. The show is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s and follows a group of friends as they uncover supernatural mysteries and government conspiracies.
Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on Netflix in 2025.
