Marvel, after acquiring Fox, is taking its time with the X-Men reboot. They’ve teased it in movies and TV shows, like Ms. Marvel, where mutants are hinted at. Also, a ’90s animated series, X-Men ’97, is coming to Disney+ in early 2024.
Marvel Begins Development for New X-Men Movie, Writer Decision Expected in 2024
According to Deadline, Marvel plans writer meetings this fall for the upcoming X-Men movie. The film’s release date isn’t set yet, so the writer’s decision will likely be made in early 2024. This news marks the start of development, exciting fans since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. X-Men, a once-popular and profitable franchise, needs a fresh start after Dark Phoenix’s disappointment in 2019.
According to Marvel, 20th Century Fox’s contractual obligations to actors in the X-Men franchise have carried over to Disney and are in effect until 2025. This means Marvel cannot recast or enter production on a film that includes roles held by some recent principal actors in the Fox X-Men franchise.
Recently, Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, hinted that the X-Men would appear in ‘Deadpool 3.’ He mentioned being blown away by the cast list and teased an epic crossover between Deadpool and characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Beast. We already revealed that ‘Deadpool 3’ is set to bring back some important characters from the previous ‘X-Men’ films.
The WGA and AMPTP deal is done, so open writing assignments will increase soon. But the spec market and productions are slow due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which resumes talks with the AMPTP on Monday.
