Neon has released the first trailer for Sean Baker‘s ‘Anora,’ the Palme d’Or-winning love story between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch.
The film follows Anora (Mikey Madison), an Uzbek-American stripper whose boss often sets her up with Russian-speaking clients. One night, she meets Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the wealthy young son of a Russian oligarch who pays to make her his girlfriend for the week. Unexpectedly, the two fall in love and elope — but the fairytale is threatened when Vanya’s parents find out. Watch the trailer below.
‘Anora’ had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2024. Madison received an Oscar buzz for Best Actress for her “star-making” performance in the film. After the screening, the film received a huge standing ovation, applauding director Sean Baker for his latest study of American sex workers, a hilariously heartbreaking ’70s-coded comedy, as well as Madison, Yura Borisov, and Ivy Wolk.
The film also stars Yuri Borisov as Igor, Karren Karagulian as Toros, Vache Tovmasyan as Garnick, Lindsey Normington as Diamond, Ivy Wolk as Crystal, Luna Sofía Miranda as Lulu, Alena Gurevich as Clara, Aleksei Serebryakov as Vanya’s father, and Darya Ekamasova as Vanya’s mother.
Produced by Baker, Samantha Quan, and Alex Coco, the film is a production of FilmNation Entertainment and Cre Film and is distributed by Neon.
During a Cannes press conference for the film, Baker said he makes films about sex workers in hopes of “helping remove the stigma.” He added, “If there is one intention with all of these films, I would say it’s by telling human stories, by telling stories that are hopefully universal. It’s helping remove the stigma that’s been applied to this livelihood, that’s always been applied to this livelihood.”
‘Anora’ is scheduled to hit theaters on October 18, 2024, distributed by Neon.
