Sony is developing an R-rated ‘Spider-Man‘ animated film, continuing the success of the two Spider-Verse animated movies.
According to the online scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, the film will focus on Spider-Verse’s Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk.
Will the R-Rated ‘Spider-Man’ Animated Film Fit into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU)?
It depends on the Spider-Man character. We know that characters like Peter Parker and Miles Morales adhere to saving people with their morals and prefer not to kill villains. However, some Spider-Man Universes may not share these ethical principles. The upcoming live-action films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3, will be R-rated.
The Spider-Verse is expanding with the confirmed development of a female-focused spin-off film, Spider-Woman. Meanwhile, the release dates for the trilogy’s concluding chapter, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, are experiencing delays due to ongoing production and VFX work.
Who is Hobie Brown?
Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk, made his film debut in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ voiced by Daniel Kaluuya. In the “Spider-Verse” storyline, the Earth-138 version of Spider-Man is revealed to be Hobart Brown. Originally a homeless teenager, he transforms into Spider-Punk after being bitten by a spider irradiated by President Norman Osborn’s toxic waste dumping. Spider-Punk, inspired by punk rock, leads the people of New York against Osborn’s V.E.N.O.M. troops. During a riot, Spider-Punk successfully defeats Osborn by smashing him with his guitar. After Osborn’s death, Spider-Punk reveals himself as the people’s savior. Later, Superior Spider-Man recruits Spider-Punk to join a team of Spider-Men.
In a recent interview, writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were unable to provide a specific release date for “Beyond the Spider-Verse.” However, they reassured fans that the film would be released “when it is ready.” Lord emphasized their dedicated efforts, affirming that they are diligently working on the project and taking the necessary time to ensure its excellence.
Miller said, “What we’re trying to accomplish with the film is have it be the most satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be and take it to places that you haven’t been before. And make you laugh and cry, and cheer and think.“
‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ came out in theaters on June 2, 2023. It’s made $684.4 million worldwide, way more than its $100 million budget, and you can also watch it on streaming platforms now.
