‘The Marvels‘ earned approximately $2.80 million on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 4,030 locations. With a domestic gross of $57.62 million and an international gross of $62.88 million, the film’s worldwide box office total now stands at $120.5 million.

‘The Marvels’ is experiencing a major setback, with a sharp 78% to 80% drop in its second weekend, marking it as the worst second-weekend performance for a Marvel Studios film. This decline also sets a new record as the poorest second-weekend showing for any Hollywood superhero film.

In China’s Box Office, ‘The Marvels’ faces challenges, slipping to #6 after grossing $620k on its second Saturday from 44k screenings, marking a shocking -87% drop from the previous Saturday. The film’s total stands at 14.4 million in nine days, with just $60k in pre-sales for the second Sunday. Projections suggest a 1.2M–1.4M second 3-day weekend and an anticipated 88%–90% drop.

Iman Vellani on ‘The Marvels’ Box Office “Focused on Enjoyment, Not Numbers”

Speaking to Yahoo, Iman Vellani, when asked about ‘The Marvels’ box-office performance, said, “I don’t want to focus on something that’s not even in my control, because what’s the point? That’s for Bob Iger. The box office has nothing to do with me. I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film.”

‘The Marvels’ received positive reviews with a 62% Tomatometer score and an 85% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb rates it at 6.1/10, and it earned a CinemaScore of B during its debut, indicating a good response from audiences.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film also holds the record of being the most expensive movie ever directed by a black woman, surpassing Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time’. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Park Seo-joon, Zawe Ashton, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur. The film also brings back Goose, the Flerken.

In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

‘The Marvels’ is now playing in theaters.
