The Penguin Episode 5 review

The Penguin Episode 5, “Homecoming,” is now streaming on HBO. The episode opens with Oz (Colin Farrell) setting fire to his car, following the events of Episode 3, where Vic (Rhenzy Feliz) saves him from Nadia Maroni (Shohreh Aghdashloo).

Oz is sure that he is not safe from Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) and the Maroni family. He makes a plan to take the drugs that the Maronis have. So, he kidnaps Taj Maroni (Aria Shahghasemi), the son of Salvatore and Nadia Maroni.

With Taj, Oz blackmails the Maronis to give up all the drugs they had previously supplied. They accept the deal to save their son. While moving around, Oz finds out that all the Falcone members were killed, and he is sure that Sofia did it. During the drug exchange, Oz kills Taj and Nadia Maroni by shooting them. He also orders Vic to leave the city with Oz’s mother. But the security team fails to kill Salvatore Maroni, so Salvatore calls Oz, threatening him after discovering his son and wife are dead.

The Penguin Episode 5 review

The drugs that the Maronis gave were almost all gone, with only a few left. Oz becomes deeply broken, while Vic takes Oz’s mother to a safe place in a flat. The officers investigate the tragic deaths of the Falcone family and begin questioning Sofia, but she convinces them of her innocence. However, she doesn’t kill Johnny Viti (Michael Kelly); instead, she spares him and ties him up in a dark place to learn about all the money that Carmine Falcone hid. Johnny knows all the details, so he makes a deal with Sofia to work under her.

Sofia finally calls the gang that worked for the Falcone family and makes a deal. Johnny doesn’t accept it, so she shoots him to death and throws the money at the gang leaders. Now, Sofia has a big gang network, and she calls herself Gigante. She goes to Salvatore Maroni, who is badly injured, to discuss working together to take the city by killing Oz. Salvatore accepts the offer.

In the end, Oz reaches the hidden place where Vic hid Oz’s mother, and they both move to a cave under the city. Oz is now in trouble, but he has the guts to handle it.

Overall, I have to say each and every episode of the show is getting better. In Episode 5, Milioti’s performance as Sofia Falcone is phenomenal, and Farrell’s is extraordinary. The perfect crime series exists in the DC universe now. What happens next? We’ll have to wait for the next episode.

The Penguin Season 1 is now available on HBO.
