Disney has confirmed that Toy Story 5 is in the works. According to reports, sequels to Disney Animation/Pixar films such as Inside Out 2, Frozen III, Toy Story 5, and Zootopia 2 are in the works.
During the Q1 earnings call on February 8, Disney CEO Bob Iger made a statement. Iger said that 7,000 Disney employees would be laid off soon and highlighted Disney+’s first-ever quarterly subscriber loss. According to reports, Disney+ lost 2.5 million subscribers in the last three months of 2022. This is the first time Disney has lost customers since its launch in 2020.
Iger said, “We are going to a really hard look at everything we make in general entertainment because things in a more competitive world have simply gotten more expensive.”
Disney is cutting jobs to save $5.5 billion. Iger stated $1 billion of those cost reductions are already happening and $2.5 billion are “non-content costs” (including employee costs). Disney CFO Christine McCarthy told analysts that over the coming years, Disney would reduce non-sports content expenses by $3 billion annually.
Tim Allen, who voiced Buzz Lightyear confirms he’s returning for Toy Story 5. “See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to number 5! To infinity and beyond!”
The Toy Story franchise includes the films Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), Toy Story 4 (2019), and the spin-off prequel film within the film Lightyear (2022). The franchise has made more than $3.3 billion worldwide, making it the 19th highest-grossing franchise and the third highest-grossing animated franchise.
