Director Neill Blomkamp has put the ‘District 9‘ sequel, ‘District 10,’ on indefinite hold, stating that he’s unsure about making it now but believes it might be made in the future.
‘District 10’ May Not Happen Soon, Confirms Neill Blomkamp
Speaking with THR, Blomkamp discussed the possibility of a ‘District 9’ sequel, ‘District 10’ during the promotion of his new film Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story. He said, “Yeah, they would be tied to it. I don’t know if it’s getting made or not. I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.”
Back in April, ‘District 9‘ star Sharlto Copley confirmed that the sequel to ‘District 9’ is in development. Copley and Blomkamp are developing the script.
District 9 was released in 2009. The plot explores themes of humanity, xenophobia, and social segregation and begins in an alternate 1982 when an alien spaceship appears over Johannesburg, South Africa. When a population of sick and malnourished insectoid aliens is discovered on the ship, the South African government confines them to an internment camp called District 9. Twenty years later, during the government’s relocation of the aliens to another camp, one of the confined aliens named Christopher Johnson, who is about to try to escape from Earth with his son and return home, crosses paths with a bureaucrat named Wikus van de Merwe leading the relocation. The title and premise of District 9 were inspired by events in Cape Town’s District Six, during the apartheid era.
‘District 9’ earned around $210.8 million worldwide. It was made on a budget of about $30 million and received positive reviews for its unique approach to sci-fi and social themes.
Blomkamp’s new film ‘Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story‘ is now playing in theaters.
