Why did the original plan for Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in ‘Madam Web’ change?
Sony first thought of having Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), starting with ‘Madame Web,’ but they later went with Tom Holland. However, any Spider-Man references in the film were changed or taken out when they realized the time period didn’t match up.
On the latest episode of THE HOT MIC, Jeff Sneider said, “Madam Webb was set in the ’90s; yes, that’s what we were told. It had been established in that era. I thought we were told, yes, from what I understand, Madam Webb was like they believed, for some reason, that Andrew Garfield was going to be the Spiderman in that world.”
Sneider added, “Not that Andrew Garfield was going to be in the movie, right, but like, for, I don’t even know, maybe this is for sequels or whatever, for whatever reason, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was supposed to be the Spider-Man in that world. And then afterwards, it was decided it’s gonna be Tom Holland. Yeah, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. So, the point was that the ages, that the timeline never didn’t line up anymore, right, right, okay, so I’d heard that the re-shoot for Madame Web.”
‘Madame Web’ is directed by S. J. Clarkson from a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film is the sixth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film stars Dakota Johnson as Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet.
