This year, we are getting four major video game adaptation movies—making it a big year for gaming fans. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the live-action Minecraft Movie and the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat sequel. Sony Pictures Releasing is bringing the horror thriller Until Dawn—based on the 2015 video game—while Universal Pictures will release the sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Hollywood has struggled for years to turn video games into hit movies and shows—early attempts failed—but now things are changing, as revealed by Private Internet Access (PIA).
1. A Minecraft Movie (4/4/2025)

A Minecraft Movie is based on the 2011 video game Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios. The film is directed by Jared Hess from a screenplay by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer.
The film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.
In the film, four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they must master this world (and protect it from dangers like piglins and zombies) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative—the very skills they need to thrive in the real world.
A Minecraft Movie will hit theaters on April 4, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
2. Until Dawn (4/25/2025)

Until Dawn is a video game adaptation of 2015’s Until Dawn game, featuring an original standalone story that expands upon the game series’ mythology. David F. Sandberg directs the film from a screenplay by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman.
The film stars Ella Rubin as Clover, Michael Cimino as Max, Odessa A’zion as Nina, Ji-young Yoo as Megan, Belmont Cameli as Abel, Maia Mitchell as Melanie, and Peter Stormare as Hill.
In the film, one year after her sister—Melanie—mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. They find themselves horrifically murdered—only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again—only each time, the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last—and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.
Until Dawn will hit theaters on April 25, 2025, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
