DC Studios has renamed the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, which is now in post-production, to simply Supergirl, as confirmed by DC boss James Gunn.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn revealed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is now officially titled Supergirl. Similarly, Gunn’s Superman: Legacy was shortened to just Superman. He explained that the change came from a process called a “premortem” — a team discussion about potential issues before filming begins.

Gunn replied after a pause, “I think it’s just called Supergirl.”

Gunn said, “Yeah. I’m always cutting. ‘Legacy’ was really — we do something called a premortem. A premortem is when you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple of months before shooting, and you go, hypothetically, ‘If it’s an epic disaster, what are the things we’re doing today that are going to cause it to be an epic disaster? Everyone here can speak freely.’”

“The things you find on other productions are the things that people are whispering. ‘Oh, God, I don’t know why they cast that actor — he doesn’t fit the role.’ Or, ‘The production designer’s never on time.’ One of the things I brought up was, it was called Superman: Legacy. Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure. First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. And then also, it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward — even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.’”

Filming for Supergirl wrapped in May in Iceland, and the film is now in post-production. Directed by Craig Gillespie, from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira and based on the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, it will be the second movie in the DC Universe and the fourth installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Gunn and Peter Safran are producing the film, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as the executive producer.

The film stars Milly Alcock play the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Jason Momoa as Lobo, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze.

In a recent leak, it was reported that David Corenswet‘s Superman has a cameo in Supergirl. In a flashback, Supergirl arrives on Earth with a puppy, Krypto. Superman opens her ship, smiles, and says, “Hi there!”

Here’s the plot details for Supergirl:

Based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2021 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book miniseries, the story follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a space adventure to help a young alien girl, Ruthye, seek revenge on the warlord Krem, who killed her father.

Supergirl will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
