Warner Bros. Pushes Mortal Kombat 2 for a More Profitable Release Window

The fans of Mortal Kombat will have to wait until next summer for the new movie. Warner Bros. Pictures has delayed Mortal Kombat 2, which was originally set for October 24, 2025, and is now scheduled for release on May 15, 2026.

According to insiders from the studio, the delay was not due to production problems, as the film is already completed and has been screened for the press. The move is a strategic decision by Warner Bros. to target the early summer box office, which is often more profitable. They want the movie to be like the success of Final Destination: Bloodlines, which was released in mid-May and earned over $50 million.

The studio teased the change with a statement: “The tournament demands a new time and place, worthy of its spectacle.” Fans will have to wait seven more months for the sequel, but the delay reflects a stronger commercial strategy rather than creative setbacks.

Jeremy Slater said in an interview that Mortal Kombat 2 test screenings felt like Avengers: Endgame, as audiences cheered and jumped out of their seats. Slater said, “I’m so excited for people to see the movie. It’s been done for a while—we’ve been waiting for the right release date and the right window. I’ve been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame—they were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing, and they are loving it. It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. That’s why you get into this business.”

According to producer Todd Garner, Mortal Kombat 2 is “not intended to be the end of the franchise,” as they have a broader long-term vision. He said there are many possibilities for spinoffs, and the creative team is listening to fan feedback and will make adjustments based on how Mortal Kombat 2 is received. The franchise is focused on the audience, and future films or spinoffs will be shaped by public reception.

Garner said, “There are plans going forward… other characters who aren’t in this movie, characters that may come back.” He added, “We have a plan further down the line for things,” revealing the development of Scorpion and Bi-Han (who appears as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 2). “Those characters have evolved. I know everybody’s waiting for Kano to get the metal plate in his eye. That will happen.”

Todd Garner confirms plans for Mortal Kombat 3 and spinoffs if Mortal Kombat 2 succeeds. Fans can expect deeper character development for Scorpion, Bi-Han (Noob Saibot), and Kano.

Directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay by Slater, Mortal Kombat 2 is based on the video game franchise created by John Tobias and Ed Boon. Serving as the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat‘ the film is also the fourth installment in the Mortal Kombat film series.

The film stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Sophia Xu as young Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han / Noob Saibot, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Max Huang as Revenant Kung Lao, and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka.

Produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh, Mortal Kombat 2 is a production of New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Broken Road Productions.

Mortal Kombat 2 will hit theaters and IMAX on May 15, 2026, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
