Tom Cruise is returning as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the Days of Thunder sequel, and the female cast has been announced.
The sequel will reunite Cruise with the franchise nearly 40 years after the original Tony Scott film, with Anne Hathaway starring opposite Cruise in the movie.
In the sequel, Cruise will reprise his role as the scrappy driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway is set to play a racecar team owner and engineer.
On X, Cruise shared the first-look poster for the sequel, featuring an unmarked Cup car in Cole Trickle’s iconic green-and-yellow paint scheme. The poster also includes Trickle’s name above the window and “Days of Thunder Summer 2028” across the side panel, while Cruise and Hathaway pose in front of the car at Daytona International Speedway.

Shortly after sharing the poster, Cruise uploaded a video of himself and Hathaway discussing their next steps. Hathaway, who is expecting her second child later this year, joked that they would make the movie after she has the baby.
Tom Cruise: “I think it’s on… Don’t you think?”
Anne Hathaway: “What should we do?”

Anne Hathaway: “Let’s make the movie!”
Tom Cruise: “You have the baby. Summer of 2028!”
Jonathan Levine (Long Shot, Mr. Irrelevant) has officially been tapped to direct the upcoming sequel, with Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Tommy Harper producing.
The original Days of Thunder followed Cruise’s Cole Trickle after he was recruited to a new NASCAR team by a retired racing legend played by Robert Duvall. Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid, and John C. Reilly also starred in the film.
Paramount Pictures has set the Days of Thunder sequel for release on June 2, 2028. The movie will be filmed for IMAX and released exclusively in theaters. It will also be available in premium formats, including Dolby Cinema and 4DX.
