Chad Stahelski‘s Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill, is aiming for a theatrical release in 2027 or 2028. The film is expected to begin filming in September 2025.
In a recent interview with Collider, Stahelski said, “If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we’ll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander.”
Recently, Deadline reported that Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber are in final negotiations to secure the rights for the new Highlander film. Stahelski, best known for directing the John Wick franchise, will helm the film from a screenplay by Michael Finch, who co-wrote John Wick: Chapter 4.

Stahelski has revealed that the story will honor the original’s mythology while expanding it on a global scale: “We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes.”
He added, “There’s a big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it’s a bit of a love story, but not in the way you’d expect.”
UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce the film alongside Neal H. Moritz and 87Eleven Entertainment, Chad Stahelski’s production company. UA has secured full rights to the Highlander franchise from Lionsgate, with potential plans for a new series. Joshua Davis of Davis Panzer is also producing.
During the 2024 CinemaCon, speaking to THR, Cavill said that he has started training for the Highlander reboot. Cavill stated, “I am a lover of the original movies, for better or worse.” He added, “It’s one of those things where, reading the script, I wasn’t quite sure where they were going to go.” What he discovered is that Stahelski and the team are “going deep into the meaning of these characters, their trials and tribulations.” Cavill concluded, “If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
The original film, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman. The storyline involves the immortals fighting each other to gain a mystical energy known as the “Quickening” when one defeats another — in it.
The new Highlander film is planned for a theatrical release.
