Illumination and Nintendo have reportedly pitched a shared cinematic universe, expanding from ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘ to potentially include a Super Smash Bros. film and multiple spin-offs.
Insider DanielRPK reports Illumination’s pitch to Nintendo for a shared universe, sparking speculation about a potential Nintendo Cinematic Universe like Marvel, DC, or Legendary’s MonsterVerse.
Nintendo is reportedly developing a live-action film based on ‘The Legend of Zelda,’ expanding its cinematic ventures beyond the Super Mario franchise.
The success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ has opened the door for Nintendo to create multiple films based on their popular games. Future possibilities include Punch-Out, Kid Icarus, Yoshi, Starfox, Luigi’s Mansion, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Pikmin, and Ice Climber.
Recently, Universal Pictures has described ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ as a “new franchise,” indicating the possibility of a sequel. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned a cumulative global box office revenue of $1,361.25 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever based on a video game and the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
The film is based on the iconic Nintendo video games and follows the origin story of the brothers Mario and Luigi, Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach, and the Koopas, led by Bowser.
Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the film, has revealed that ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2‘ is coming soon. Pratt revealed that once the WGA negotiations are done and the writers are ready, they will begin discussing what comes next for the sequel.
