Joe Russo, the co-director of the upcoming Avengers films, revealed that Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will draw “loose inspiration” from both the 1980s and 2010s Secret Wars comic book series. Joe said, “We always create our own version of the story.”
In a recent interview with TechRadar for their new movie The Electric State (releasing on Netflix on March 14), Joe and Anthony Russo shared their approach to adapting the comics.
The Russo brothers confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will take inspiration from both the 1980s and 2010s Secret Wars comic series. They clarified that neither version of Secret Wars will have more influence than the other in shaping the story.
Joe Russo said, “Well, we always create our own version of the story.” He added, “So, we use the comics as loose inspiration.”
He continued, “But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic, and they’re very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.”
The Russo Brothers will direct the upcoming Avengers movies, and Stephen McFeely will pen the script.
