Todd Garner, the producer of the Mortal Kombat movies, revealed that there are plans for Mortal Kombat 3 and spinoffs—only if Mortal Kombat 2 is successful.
Speaking to FutureBoyWho2, Garner said that Mortal Kombat 2 is “not intended to be the end of the franchise,” as they have a broader long-term vision. The team used feedback from the first Mortal Kombat film to refine the direction of the second movie. He said they wanted to “hone in on figuring out exactly what we wanted that second movie to be.”

According to Garner, there are plans for deeper development of main characters—Scorpion, Bi-Han (who returns as Noob Saibot), and Kano, who will eventually get his iconic metal eye plate. Garner also confirmed that future films and spinoffs are possible if Mortal Kombat 2 performs well at the box office.
Garner said, “There are plans going forward… other characters who aren’t in this movie, characters that may come back.” He added, “We have a plan further down the line for things,” revealing the development of Scorpion and Bi-Han (who appears as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 2). “Those characters have evolved. I know everybody’s waiting for Kano to get the metal plate in his eye. That will happen.”
Also, Garner said that nothing is set in stone for the franchise’s future. “If we’re allowed to do further movies, hopefully this one does well enough—there’s a chance to do other things, spinoffs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters, and evolve the characters that we already have.”
Garner says there are many possibilities for spinoffs, as the Mortal Kombat franchise has 25 games with deep and wild lore to explore. Meanwhile, the creative team is listening to fan feedback and will make adjustments based on how Mortal Kombat 2 is received. The franchise is focused on the audience, and future films or spinoffs will be shaped by public reception.

“However this movie is received by the public en masse, we’ll make adjustments and we’ll take that feedback… that’s what’s great about this. We can interact with each other, and we’re listening and we’re gonna take that feedback in… so that it’s enjoyable for everybody.”
Recently, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, which received a very positive response from fans. Watch it below.
Here are the plot details for Mortal Kombat 2:
From New Line Cinema comes the latest high‑stakes chapter in the blockbuster video game franchise, Mortal Kombat 2. This time, the fan‑favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no‑holds‑barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn, a threat that endangers the very existence of Earthrealm and its defenders.
In the film, Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, and Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi‑Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, the film’s screenwriter, Jeremy Slater, revealed that test screenings of Mortal Kombat 2 felt like Avengers: Endgame, with audiences cheering and jumping out of their seats.
Slater said, “I’m so excited for people to see the movie. It’s been done for a while — we’ve been waiting for the right release date and the right window. I’ve been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame — they were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing, and they are loving it. It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. That’s why you get into this business.”
Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the follow‑up to his explosive 2021 cinematic adventure, from a screenplay by Slater, based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The film is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff serving as executive producers.
Mortal Kombat 2 will hit theaters and IMAX across North America on October 24, 2025, and internationally beginning October 22, 2025, through Warner Bros. Pictures.
