The plot synopsis for Sony’s ‘Karate Kid,’ featuring Jackie Chan, Ben Wang, and Ralph Macchio, has been revealed.
Directed by Jonathan Entwistle from a screenplay by Rob Lieber and produced by Karen Rosenfelt. The film follows the story to the East Coast and focuses on a teen from China (Wang) who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough-but-wise mentor (or two).
According to the film’s synopsis:
Li, a proficient fighter and student in Beijing, faces a major change when his mother decides to move to Brooklyn due to a work opportunity. Struggling with a past tragedy, Li clashes with his doctor mother, who is also dealing with the same tragedy but with a different approach. Despite his mother’s aversion to violence and Kung Fu, Li discovers meaning in training Victor in this martial art, leading him to return to the ring as well.
THR recently reported that Joshua Jackson has joined the cast, described as one of the main characters in the piece.
The 2010 film ‘The Karate Kid’ is directed by Harald Zwart, remaking the 1984 original. Jaden Smith stars as Dre Parker, who moves to China with his mother and faces bullying. He befriends Mr. Han, a maintenance man and martial arts master, who teaches him kung fu for self-defense. While it maintains the core story, the film adapts to China’s setting and modern themes. It emphasizes friendship, discipline, and growth, with Chan’s portrayal of Mr. Han adding a unique touch. The movie was well received, introducing a new generation to the story and paying homage to the original’s legacy. The film has grossed over $359 million worldwide.
The new ‘Karate Kid’ movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 30, 2025, by Sony Pictures.
