Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. looks unrecognizable on the set of Park Chan-wook’s “The Sympathizer” for HBO and A24. The series is a genre-bending epic that follows an unnamed Vietnamese narrator who works as a communist double agent after immigrating to the United States. Check out the images below.
According to reports, Downey Jr. plays multiple main antagonists in “The Sympathizer.”
Some of the roles are an Orange County Congressman, a CIA agent, and a Hollywood film director.
It’s difficult to look at Robert Downey Jr. in his new look for the HBO series, but he is dedicated to the roles he performs in all of his films. Downey Jr. wore a red coat, and his hair was golden. “Set in 1974, The historical drama-thriller follows a half-French, half-Vietnamese man who was a spy for Communist forces during the Vietnam War.”
Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar directed the series, which is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The series also stars Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bebop), Fred Nguyen Khan (Transplant), Toan Le, Vy Le, and Alan Trong (The Tomorrow War). The series is currently in production, with filming in Los Angeles and Thailand.
Park and McKellar will also executive produce along with Downey, Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey. Niv Fichman will also executive produce through Rhombus Media, as will Kim Ly. The series is a co-production between HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media, in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film. Jennifer Venditti is the casting director.
“The Sympathizer” release date is TBA.
