Minions & Monsters is now playing in theaters, becoming the newest movie in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise.
Director Pierre Coffin has revealed a scrapped opening concept for Minions & Monsters. The original idea would have shown the Minions being born from the Big Bang, after which they would travel across the universe before arriving on a young Earth.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Coffin said the Minions would have helped separate the Moon from what became Earth, making them part of the planet’s creation. The concept suggested that the Minions were the true origin of everything in the franchise. However, the idea was ultimately scrapped because it was considered too far removed from the movie’s main story.

Coffin said, “I had another idea for the opening credits of Minions & Monsters.”
He added, “I wanted it to start with the Big Bang and then out of the Big Bang came darkness and multiple little yellow dots. Then we’d follow these yellow dots going from planet to planet and then eventually come to this big blue thing that was kind of separating, so they helped the separation of the Moon and what would become the Earth. Then those little yellow dots would come on Earth and populate the Earth. Basically, we were trying to say that the origin of this whole thing actually is the Minions. Then it was deemed slightly off-subject with the type of movie we wanted to make.”
Although, Coffin said the concept could still be used in a future Minions movie.
Can Minions die?
Coffin has confirmed that the Minions cannot die. They’ve survived explosions, being run over, hanging, and even being launched into space.
He says the Minions appear to be immortal, as they have survived every dangerous situation they’ve faced. Because of that, he believes they simply can’t die. He said, “We tried multiple times, but they seem to come back alive every time for some reason. So I’m guessing they can’t die.”
Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin from a screenplay by Coffin and Brian Lynch. Produced by Illumination, the film serves as the third Minions prequel and the seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise. The voice cast includes Pierre Coffin, Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr.
Minions & Monsters introduces an entirely new tribe of Minions who find themselves in Hollywood at the dawn of cinema. The story follows two brand-new Minions, James and Henry. We meet them and their rambunctious friends in the distant past and witness their trials and tribulations as they search far and wide for an evil master to serve.
Eventually, they reach the 1920s and end up crashing a Hollywood film set. Their brief and accidental appearance on camera pays off, and before they know it, the Minions become bona fide movie stars. They begin living the Hollywood lifestyle, throwing lavish parties, residing in a huge mansion, and inspiring an army of fans to dress in overalls and goggles.
Minions & Monsters is in theaters now.
