Taika Waititi says that as an auteur, initially he had no interest in ‘Thor‘ films, admitting, ‘I never read ‘Thor’ comics as a kid.’ Financial considerations shifted his perspective: ‘I was poor and I’d just had a second child. I thought this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.’
Taika Waititi Revealed that he Joined the MCU for the Money
In an interview with IndieWire, Waititi revealed that he had no interest in doing a CBM (Comic Book Movie) until he was offered the opportunity to direct the ‘Thor’ film from Marvel Studios. Considering the substantial payment, he ultimately agreed.
Waititi said, “I had no interest in doing one of those films. It wasn’t on my plan for my career as an auteur. But I was poor, and I’d just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what? This would be a great opportunity to feed these children.'” He added, “And ‘Thor,’ let’s face it—it was probably the least popular franchise. I never read ‘Thor’ comics as a kid. That was the comic I’d pick up and be like, ‘Ugh.’ And then I did some research on it, and I read one ‘Thor’ comic or 18 pages, or however long they are.”
Recently, Waititi has confirmed that Chris Hemsworth is in talks to return for ‘Thor 5‘ with Marvel Studios. But, Waititi won’t return to direct.
In an interview with Inverse, Waititi revealed that talks between Hemsworth and Marvel for a fifth Thor movie are underway, but he feels the need for a break.
Waititi said, “I needed a break from that (the Thor films).” Waititi added, “It’s a very draining process working on these films for two and a half years and nonstop.”
‘Thor 5’ does not have a confirmed release date yet; it is currently awaiting an official announcement. Stay tuned for updates on the film’s schedule. See more details.
