Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a ‘Silver Surfer‘ project.
According to insider Daniel Richtman—in his latest Marvel Updates Patreon post—it was confirmed that Matt Shakman, who is directing the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, will produce the ‘Silver Surfer’ project.
What is Known About the Upcoming ‘Silver Surfer’ Project?
It is unclear whether the upcoming ‘Silver Surfer’ project will be a feature film or a TV show. Marvel is expected to announce the project during its next panel or official announcement. Cast details have not yet been revealed.
In Marvel Comics, the Silver Surfer first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 in 1966—created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. He is the alter ego of Norrin Radd, a humanoid from the planet Zenn-La. To save his homeworld from the planet-devouring entity Galactus, Norrin made a deal to become Galactus’ herald. In the movies, the Silver Surfer appeared in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)—portrayed by actor Doug Jones (physical performance) and voiced by Laurence Fishburne.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps was originally planned to include the Silver Surfer, but Marvel has since changed the approach. Instead, Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, will appear in the film, portrayed by Emmy winner Julia Garner.
In Marvel Comics, Shalla-Bal is connected to the Silver Surfer. She’s from the planet Zenn-La and is important because she’s the Silver Surfer’s girlfriend. They have a deep relationship in the comics. Shalla-Bal is smart, kind, and brave, just like the Silver Surfer.
Filming for The Fantastic Four: First Steps is happening in London. Directed by Shakman from the original script penned by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer, which has undergone a rewrite by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. In the film, Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Ralph Ineson as Galactus. Garner as female Silver Surfer, with Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich in undisclosed roles. Additionally, characters yet to be cast include Mole Man and H.E.R.B.I.E.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
