Rockstar Games has officially revealed that Grand Theft Auto VI, which was originally set to release this fall, has been delayed to May 26, 2026.

The delay is due to Rockstar’s goal to make the game the best it can be—even better than fans expect. They need more time to finish the game properly and ensure it’s high quality.

In a press statement, Rockstar Games said,

“Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto have been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.

We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”

The story revolves around a criminal duo: Lucia, the first female protagonist in the series since 2000, and her male partner. The first trailer shows Lucia starting as a prison inmate and later escaping custody alongside her partner.

Following the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a press release that the publisher “fully supports” Rockstar’s GTA 6 delay and expects “record net bookings” this financial year, regardless.

Zelnick said, “We fully support Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a ground-breaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.” Zelnick added, “While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence.”

Zelnick continued, “As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders.”

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on May 26th, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
