Todd Haynes’ ‘May December’ Stuns Cannes with 8-Minute Standing Ovation
Todd Haynes‘ ‘May December‘, starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, charmed audiences at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, earning an 8-minute standing ovation.
Deadline shared the footage and quoted, “Todd Haynes addresses the audience after an 8-minute standing ovation for his ‘May September’ melodrama. The screening began 35 minutes later due to the tardiness of those involved with ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. That film started 40 minutes behind schedule.” See the footage below.
Director Haynes stood between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, addressing the Lumière audience, and expressed his delight in creating ‘May December’, saying, “The making of this film was such a joy… We shot it in 23 days in Savannah — it took everybody’s full cooperation to make this possible.” (Via Deadline)
According to the film’s plot synopsis:
Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) buckles under the pressure when an actress (Natalie Portman) arrives to do research for a film about their past.
The script is penned by Samy Burch from a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik. The film also stars Piper Curda as Honor Atherton-Yoo, Elizabeth Yu as Mary Atherton-Yoo, and Gabriel Chung as Charlie Atherton-Yoo. See the set images.
