Chad Stahelski‘s ‘Highlander‘ reboot, starring Henry Cavill, is in development at Lionsgate and set to start filming in 2024 with a budget exceeding $100 million.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate is set to debut sales at the AFM for their long-anticipated fantasy reboot. The film stars Cavill in the lead role as the Scottish swordsman and is directed by John Wick director Stahelski. Cavill and Stahelski were on board before the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The ‘Highlander’ reboot is produced by Joshua Davis, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski (via 87Eleven Entertainment), and Louise Rosner. The screenplay is by Mike Finch, with the late Peter S. Davis, the original ‘Highlander’ producer, initiating the new film’s development. Summit acquired remake rights to the original in 2008.
Stahelski’s ‘Highlander’ will be based on the 1986 original, featuring immortal beings played by Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, who hunt each other down to gain power. This concept, known for the “There can be only one” tagline, led to four sequels and three TV series, including the popular USA series with Adrian Paul.
Cavill recently starred in ‘The Witcher’ Season 3 on Netflix and won’t be returning for Season 4. His upcoming roles include ‘Argylle’ directed by Matthew Vaughn (watch trailer) and two films with Guy Ritchie, one set during World War II titled ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.’ Stahelski successfully completed the ‘John Wick’ series with Keanu Reeves, a highly profitable venture for Lionsgate, grossing over $1 billion. While ‘Highlander’ was initially discussed as the first in a trilogy, its current status remains unknown. Stahelski also hinted at the possibility of ‘John Wick: Chapter 5’ after the success of Chapter 4.
The release date for the ‘Highlander’ reboot is still to be confirmed.
