The titles are currently being filmed with IMAX film or IMAX-certified digital cameras. This slate marks the largest offering of Filmed for IMAX releases ever in a single calendar year, more than double any previous year. Filmmakers and studios from Hollywood and international territories are increasingly creating content for the IMAX platform.
In a statement, Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, said “As more of the world’s best filmmakers create specifically for our platform, IMAX is becoming as much about excellence in production as it is presentation of the biggest blockbuster filmmaking.” Gelfond added, “Quite simply, audiences get that if you see a movie Filmed for IMAX in IMAX, you’re getting the best, most immersive cinematic experience money can buy, which is why we’re driving a huge share of the global box office on these titles.”
The increase in IMAX-focused production follows a streak of record-breaking successes for Filmed for IMAX titles. Despite representing less than 1% of total screens worldwide, IMAX locations consistently deliver substantial returns at the box office.
For example, “Oppenheimer,” shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, grossed over $190 million globally, with IMAX contributing 20% of its box office revenue. This made it the fifth highest-grossing IMAX film ever.
Similarly, “Dune: Part Two,” filmed exclusively with IMAX-certified digital cameras, earned over $145 million worldwide, with IMAX accounting for 21% of its box office earnings, placing it as the seventh highest-grossing IMAX film.
Furthermore, in the first quarter of 2024, IMAX captured 5.9% of the Domestic Box Office, its highest quarterly market share ever in North America. Globally, IMAX accounted for 3.4% of the total box office revenue.
Currently, filmmakers’ increasing interest in shooting with IMAX, the company is developing four new next-generation IMAX 15/65mm film cameras, expected to begin beta testing by August 2024 and enter production by the end of the same year, offering improved image quality, modern design, features, and functionality with a 30% reduction in noise, with input from acclaimed filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele; currently, IMAX owns nine original IMAX 15/65mm film cameras and continues to see filmmakers like Joseph Kosinski embracing the IMAX platform for projects like his forthcoming Formula One film with Director of Photography Claudio Miranda.
