Matthew Vaughn (‘Kingsman’ and ‘X-Men: First Class’) is open to directing the upcoming Supergirl movie for the DCU.
Recently, Milly Alcock has been confirmed as the new Kara Zor-El/Supergirl for the DCU and will appear in the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘ movie. The director’s chair, however, is yet to be filled.
Speaking on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, Vaughn was asked if he would be interested in directing the upcoming adaptation of ‘Superman: Woman of Tomorrow.’ He replied that he would consider directing ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’
Vaughn said, “I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan. Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”
Matthew Vaughn Passes on ‘The Flash’ for Own Superhero Project
Vaughn was offered the opportunity to direct ‘The Flash,’ but he opted to follow his vision, including recasting, and developing his own superhero film.
Vaughn said, “I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing… so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”
Alcock is set to headline her solo film, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ with filming scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024. Before her standalone movie, Supergirl will make her DC Universe debut in Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy.’
Gunn announced a Supergirl film, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ as part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in the DC Universe. Ana Nogueira will write the script. Gunn, commenting on the announcement, said, ‘In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
The release date for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is yet to be announced (TBA).
