Paramount is working on a new ‘Star Trek‘ film with director Toby Haynes and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, produced by J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot.
The film will be a secret origin story set decades before the 2009 reboot. Meanwhile, ‘Star Trek 4‘ is still in the works.
Though no film has been released since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, the brand thrives with popular Paramount+ shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds. Brian Robbins-led Paramount aims to build on this success with multiple films in development. Toby Haynes, director of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor, brings his expertise to the project, currently nominated for eight Emmys, including Best Drama Series.
What is the Status of ‘Star Trek 4’?
‘Star Trek 4’ has been in development for several years. The script was written by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires, with a draft from Lindsey Anderson Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Anderson Beer said, “I wrote a couple drafts of that before I had to leave for Pet Sematary. And originally, the seed of the idea came from J.J. himself, who’s such a creatively generous person, and it was amazing collaborating with him.” Anderson Beer added, “And it was very sad to leave our Zoom sessions to focus on [Pet Sematary: Bloodlines], but this was my baby, so I had to prioritize.”
Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision, was initially set to direct ‘Star Trek’ 4 but passed on the project to helm Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot. As of now, a new director for ‘Star Trek 4’ has not been chosen.
