Iman Vellani revealed that Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in ‘The Marvels’ post-credits scene was filmed early and kept a secret from her.
In ‘The Marvels’ post-credits scene, Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau finds herself in the X-Men universe, which runs parallel to Earth 616 reality. Here, she discovers that her mom, Maria Rambeau, is a mutant and the first Marvel character in that reality, known as Photon. Dr. Beast (Grammer) makes an appearance while Monica and Maria engage in a conversation.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Vellani shared that Dr. Beast’s scene in ‘The Marvels’ was filmed early on and kept a secret from her.
Vellani said, “They shot the mid-credit scene during principal [photography]. They shot it earlier, so they knew what they were doing. But I thought it was going to be something else. I did not realize the Beast was in it. I knew they shot it, but I was expecting to see something else. And lo and behold, they kept the secret even from me.” Vellani added, “I literally jumped and had a heart attack on my bed when I watched it for the first time. I literally texted every single person we worked with, and I was like, “How could you keep this from me?” But at least I got to experience it as a fan, which was so cool. I’m just so excited to see what they do with that in the future.”
Vellani continued, “Even when we were filming it, we didn’t know if it was going to make the cut at the end of the day. So I was praying. I emailed Kevin, and I was like, “This needs to be real,” because what an honor it is to be called the first mutant in the MCU. It’s just so cool.”
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Vellani revealed that she wants Kamala Khan to collect ‘Young Avengers’ like Infinity Stones. Vellani said, “Hailee Steinfeld and I had a really fun back and forth.” Vellani speaks of that post-credits scene, which finds Kamala inviting Kate to be part of a ‘Young Avengers’ initiative. Vellani added, “Tonally, it wouldn’t have made sense if we kept joking about [the Young Avengers team], but we were having so much fun bouncing off each other.”
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film also holds the record of being the most expensive movie ever directed by a black woman, surpassing Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time’. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Park Seo-joon, Zawe Ashton, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur. The film also brings back Goose, the Flerken.
In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
‘The Marvels’ received positive reviews with a 62% Tomatometer score and an 85% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb rates it at 6.1/10, and it earned a CinemaScore of B during its debut, indicating a good response from audiences.
