The chances of a sequel to ‘The Eternals‘ are uncertain, as Marvel Studios reportedly has put the production on hold.
‘The Eternals 2’ May Not Happen Soon
According to insider Daniel Richtman’s new update on Patreon, ‘The Eternals 2‘ is reportedly no longer in development. Marvel president Kevin Feige wants it to be made, but the CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, thinks it’s a guaranteed flop. Now, Marvel is focusing on fewer risks with their movies and more guaranteed hits.
So, it is almost confirmed that Captain Marvel 3, Ant-Man 4, and all these sequels are not in development anymore. Marvel’s decision aims to keep the MCU alive, as the recent string of box-office flops is deemed unacceptable.
Will the Eternals Make a Return in the MCU?
It doesn’t mean that The Eternals members may not make their appearance in the MCU; they are next going to appear in ‘What If…?‘ Season 3. An episode titled “What If the Eternals Never Stopped the Emergence?” will feature the return of Eternals members Sersi, Ikaris, Thena, Ajak, Kingo, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, and Gilgamesh. It follows a scenario where the Eternals could not prevent the catastrophic event that threatens to destroy Earth. Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
In August 2022, Patton Oswalt revealed in an interview that a sequel to Eternals is developing, with Chloé Zhao returning to direct. The confirmed cast till today is Harry Styles’ Eros/Starfox and Oswalt as Pip the Troll.
As previously confirmed, Richard Madden‘s Ikaris may not return in the sequel, the rest of the cast, including Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Harish Patel as Karun Patel, Bill Skarsgård as Kro, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena, are set to return.
‘Eternals,’ released in 2021, was directed by Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo. The film features a star-studded cast including Chan, Madden, Nanjiani, McHugh, Tyree Henry, Ridloff, Keoghan, Lee, Harington, and Hayek. Despite grossing $402 million worldwide at the box office, the film received a poor response from both critics and audiences alike.
‘Eternals’ is now available on Disney+.
