DreamWorks Animation‘s Shrek 5 is all set for a Christmas 2026 release. The film, which is currently in production, has a plot centering on Shrek’s daughter, who is played by Zendaya and accidentally transports her father and Donkey to the real world while practicing magic.
Here are the plot details for Shrek 5:
Shrek’s daughter (Zendaya), while practicing magic, accidentally transports Shrek and Donkey to the real world. Now, they must find a way back because she doesn’t know the spell to bring them home.

Back in February, Universal Pictures revealed the first teaser for Shrek 5, confirming the cast details. The clip showed Donkey asking a magic mirror, ‘Who’s the fairest of them all?’ It replied, ‘Shrek, of course,’ and then a scene appeared in the mirror showing Shrek dancing in a black leather bodysuit.
Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me, The Super Mario Bros. Movie) is producing the fifth installment of the nearly 25-year-old Shrek franchise. McCullers has teased that Shrek 5, which has been in the works since 2016, is a “pretty big reinvention.”
Directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, with Brad Ableson as co-director, Shrek 5 features a screenplay written by Michael McCullers. The film is a sequel to Shrek Forever After (2010), serving as the fifth main installment and the seventh overall in the Shrek film series. It is loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book Shrek!.
Speaking to THR, McCullers said, “Reinvention was sort of called for.” McCullers added, “There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz return as the voices of Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona. Zendaya joins the cast as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.
Produced by Meledandri and Gina Shay.
Shrek 5 will hit theaters on December 23, 2026 by Universal Pictures.
