Dwayne Johnson may return to the original The Mummy franchise, as Universal Pictures reportedly wants him to appear in the next The Mummy film.
According to insider Daniel Richtman on Patreon, Universal Pictures is in talks with Dwayne Johnson for a role in the new The Mummy film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
The studio is reportedly interested in bringing Johnson back as the Scorpion King and wants him to appear in the film, at least in a cameo role.
In The Mummy Returns, Johnson played the role of Mathayus of Akkad, also known as the Scorpion King, an ancient warrior who sold his soul to Anubis. Back in December 2025, during Variety’s Actors on Actors, Johnson and Fraser reunited for an emotional conversation about how Johnson’s Hollywood career began. Johnson thanked Fraser for supporting him and helping him land his first major film role in The Mummy Returns.
Johnson said, “You took a risk on me… who had never acted… years later, you and I are sitting here… I want to thank you for really changing my life.”
The upcoming Mummy film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It will be a sequel to The Mummy film series, originally a 1990s action-adventure horror franchise, and is described as a continuation that will disregard the events of the third film.
David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, The Deliverance) is writing the screenplay, and franchise producer Sean Daniel returns to produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.
Filming is expected to begin soon, and the release date is TBA.
