David Fincher Confirms “Mindhunter” Season 3 Will Not Happen

David Fincher, the executive producer of “Mindhunter,” says season 3 will not happen. Season 2’s final episode debuted on Netflix in August 2019, with no announcement from Netflix regarding a potential season 3. In a statement, a Netflix representative stated Fincher wanted to pursue other projects: “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime, he felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them back from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

Speaking to Le Journal du Dimanche, Fincher said, Mindhunter is a particularly expensive series, and Netflix does not have a large enough audience to justify such an investment. He said, “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a particularly expensive show, and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment.”

Fincher added, “I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series, gave me the means to do as I dreamed Mank [his black and white film on Hollywood in the 1930s] would, and they allowed me to venture on new paths with The Killer. It’s a chance to be able to work with people capable of audacity. The day when our desires will no longer be the same, we will have to be honest to separate.”

The Mindhunter series is based on John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s 1995 true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. Joe Penhall created the series. Mindhunter stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv and is based on the late 1970s founding of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and the beginning of criminal profiling.
