Joaquin Phoenix‘s next film, likely to be NC-17 rated, with Todd Haynes, will start filming this summer. The movie is a secretive detective story about two intense lovers who leave California for Mexico.
According to Deadline, the upcoming film, currently untitled, has MK2 Films collaborating with Haynes and Phoenix. MK2 and John Sloss’ Cinetic will be in talks with potential buyers for the film in the coming weeks.
According to Haynes, his next film is described as a love story between two men, with Joaquin Phoenix playing the role of a gay character. Speaking to Les Inrocks, Haynes said, “There’s another movie I want to do in early 2024. It’s a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it’s set in the 1930s. A love story between two men, based on an original, very audacious scenario. This is, I believe, his first gay role. I am very excited about this project!”
Haynes mentioned that the film is likely to have an NC-17 rating and was created from a screenplay developed by himself, Phoenix, and Jon Raymond. Haynes said, “We wrote with him as a story writer.” Haynes added, “Me and Jon Raymond and Joaquin share the story credit.”
Next, Phoenix will be seen in a sequel to “Joker” titled “Joker: Folie à Deux,” written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips. Additionally, he will co-star with Mara in Pawel Pawlikowski’s dramatic thriller “The Island.”
Haynes’ regular producer, Christine Vachon, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for “Past Lives,” is producing the film.
Haynes’ most recent film, “May December,” was released on Netflix and features Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton in starring roles.
